Dee Barrow, Eileen Olson, Robin Hvidston, Kim Harris and her mother, and Raymond Herrera along with other law enforcement supporters, filled the front row. We were there to support Aquanetta Warren and the Arizona immigration law, calling for the city council to adopt a resolution in support of Arizona.

PUBLIC COMMENTS
12 boisterous speakers denounced the Arizona immigration law and 6 speakers supported the Arizona immigration law. 5 speakers were neutral on the topic.

Ignoring the orders of the mayor - open border speakers demanded clapping be allowed.
The audience began to clap and occasionally hollered out.
For example, the mayor allowed 4 pro-illegal alien speakers to turn around from the podium, and to face Raymond Herrera and our pro-law enforcement group, and then, verbally berate Raymond Herrera rather than address the city council. As the 4th speaker was engaged in verbally chastising Raymond Herrera, rather than address the city council, I hollered out: ADDRESS THE CITY COUNCIL NOT HERRERA. The mayor stopped the meeting, told us to stop the "outbursting" then gave a short lecture BUT the mayor FINALLY told the speaker to address the council. You can view the video below - the speaker who addresses Herrera begins at 34 seconds:

FONTANA - Heated rhetoric on race and immigration has erupted during the city's public meetings, as Latino activists and elected leaders clash over controversial policies here and elsewhere.

It was no different at last week's City Council meeting, where activists blasted Councilwoman Acquanetta Warren for comments she made in a black newspaper supporting Arizona law S.B. 1070, which requires law enforcement officers in that state to verify the immigration status of people they suspect might be in the country illegally.

"Acquanetta, I don't understand what you have with your own black race, because you'll never be a white Republican," said Gil Navarro, a trustee for the San Bernardino County Board of Education. "They'll never accept you, so you should not try to use that, the fact that Arizona has a law against immigrants."

Navarro, who is running for the Democratic nomination in the 62nd Assembly District on June 8, called Warren a racist for suggesting that illegal immigration is taking jobs away from blacks.

"I don't know where you're coming from, but obviously what you're trying to create is black against Latinos, and that's racism," Navarro said.

Warren, who is running for the Republican nomination in the 63rd Assembly District, called Navarro's comments "ridiculous" and scolded many of the activists in attendance for "playing the race card."

"This issue is a security issue," Warren said. "We need to protect our borders.

We must safeguard against terrorists, criminals and drug pushers. And yes about jobs, you bet it's about jobs. And taxes."

Warren then added that too often when people apply for jobs they must contend with people who don't speak English.

"You get here illegally, you need to learn how to speak English," Warren said. "You need to understand the culture in America."

Latino activists say it's comments by Warren and other leaders in the city that are stoking Latino distrust for city officials.

They have pressed officials to join forums on race relations and adopt resolutions against anti-illegal immigration policies.

Indeed, one activist has met with officials over issues of immigration and race.

Bobbi Jo Chavarria, a former ACORN representative now affiliated with Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, an organization that broke away from ACORN, has met with Councilman Frank Scialdone and Fontana Unified School District trustees Kathy Binks and BarBara Chavez to go over how the city can eliminate the perception some Latinos have about discrimination and intolerance in the city.

In October, Latino groups voiced concerns over alleged acts of racial profiling by law enforcement officers conducting driver's license checkpoints near public schools.

They also demanded that the council adopt a resolution decrying the federal 287(g) Program, which allows designated law enforcement officers to perform immigration law enforcement functions.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department enforces the program locally.

Binks, during a public meeting in March, made reference to American-born children of immigrants being "anchor babies." She apologized for the remark, saying she didn't understand its connotation.

Chavarria, who is running for mayor, called the meeting with the officials a "small step forward."

"It actually was really just to try to understand how deep or how solid the commitment was to participate from our elected officials," she said.

Scialdone said the meeting, which included other concerned Latinos, should have included a broader representation of the community, such as blacks, Asians and members of faith-based groups.

Scialdone added that if the group wants police to stop conducting the checkpoints and demands that the council adopt a resolution against 287(g), then he would not be a part of the group.

"Those are nonstarters for me," he said.

But one official wants nothing to do with the efforts of Latino activists to draw the city into a dialogue about race.

Mayor Mark Nuaimi has called their speeches at the council and school board meetings "fearmongering" and "hatemongering" in an election season.

Nuaimi on his Facebook.com page referred to Steven Figueroa, as "some (w)activist from Riverside," after Figueroa presented the mayor with a mock pink slip at a council meeting earlier this month.

The flier accused Nuaimi of disrespecting citizens, and asked: "Is it his Middle Eastern heritage?"

Figueroa attempted to black out the question with a marker, but the words could still be read.

"I blacked it out because my position was, enough of this," Figueroa said.

One version of the flier said Nuaimi should vacate his position for "allowing his Middle Eastern heritage and mentality to dictate his demeanor as a `Hot Head."'

"It is hilarious to watch the hypocrisy," Nuaimi said. "I think I'll sit back ... and let Steve drown in it."

Nuaimi has defended Binks, saying the term "anchor baby" is a phrase used on network TV, newspapers and debates in Congress.

Figueroa has called on Nuaimi to condemn Binks' remarks.

On Wednesday, Figueroa told Nuaimi, who referred to him on Facebook as a "self-aggrandizing bigot," that the online posts were inappropriate as a representative of the city.

"I was expecting more of a mayor than to be sending such hate e-mail to me," Figueroa said.

Nuaimi said Thursday the public fights would likely end after election season.

"This is nothing more than the militants and radicals coming out to try and use racism charges to gain power. That was never more evident than (Wednesday) night."

Without doubt the dynamic duo have been brave and have endured the taunts, threats, and ridicule of the invaders as they fight for America.

They have my respect and admiration as does RIMO5 for her contributions:).
