Wilson's return may hurt GOP Latino outreach
To many California Latinos, former California Gov. Pete Wilson is "a monster ... a Frankenstein," says Latino leader Arturo Vargas. United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez calls Wilson "the ultimate bogeyman" for his advocacy of 1994's anti-immigration Proposition 187 that sealed his re-election.
Wilson has resurfaced in this year's governor's race as chair of former eBay CEO Meg Whitman's campaign. Whitman's rival in the Republican primary, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, has called for a return to Prop. 187-style immigration controls in California.
