This is why rail is the solution of so many of this country's problems. While there are many rail solutions being proposed, too many of them are poorly motivated.
It is much easier to keep track of people moving on rail than it is keeping track of them in cars. But it is also much easier to keep track of cargo and this is where rail plans are lacking. We can suppress the movement of illegals in rail and we can also suppress the hand of illegals in trafficking cargo as well. And of course, many illegals are moved as cargo too and this is again something easier to police with rail. Our current rail system is absolutely miserable. It is wretched beyond belief and anyone who has had to stop at a rail crossing and watch the miserable parade of rusty box cars go by knows what I am talking about. Even the somewhat neater rows of crap being shipped in from China isn't very encouraging. Neither is the rows of two by fours on their way to some pathetic real estate development. It should be a federal crime for illegals to be operating a vehicle of any kind. Bicycles too.

As Nina Bernstein of The Times reported on Monday, border checkpoints aren’t just at the border anymore. She rode the train in western New York and found agents roaming the aisles, questioning passengers about their citizenship and removing those who could not prove they were here legally. What she described looked like just the kind of aggressive internal immigration enforcement that right-wing politicians have clamored for, but is arbitrary, oppressive and dangerously prone to racial profiling.
This potential for racial profiling can easily be filtered out by having the agents handle it in the same manner as cops conduct DUI/License Check enforcements stops. Simply question every 3rd passenger they pass (or every 6th or every 8th, etc. etc.) If, after questioning the person, the interrogated is unable to produce I.D., that gives reas. suspicion to question the folks traveling with him. They have to be systematic about it and it'd probably be wise to film it.
