On Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at approximately 10:24 p.m., deputies from the Barstow Sheriff’s Station along with Officers from the California Highway Patrol, and Military Police from the Marine Corp Base were responding to the Nebo on ramp on Interstate 40 following a report of a possible dead body wrapped in a bloody sheet.

As emergency personnel were responding to the scene, additional personnel from the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detail, Scientific Investigations Division were also being made aware of the incident and were beginning to respond to the location. As deputies were surveying the area near the “body”, approximately 100 yards away they noticed two people sitting on a hilltop with binoculars. Deputies made contact with the suspects who admitted that they had placed the “manikin” at the location and the entire incident was a “Halloween prank.”

The additional law enforcement personnel that were responding to the location were canceled. The two suspects, Tina Jaramillo 42 of Yermo and Sharron Dennis 39, of Victorville, were arrested, transported and booked into the Barstow Jail for PC 148.3(A) False Report of an Emergency. Jaramillo and Dennis remain in custody and are being held on $10,000.00 bail.

A tv news station said that they splashed the mannequin with red paint, wrapped it up in a sheet, slashed more paint on it, then dumped it by the road. The officers were alerted to the womens' presence by their laughter.

It seems it wasn't so funny to the cops. The pair are probably on the way to West Valley Pre-Trial Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga if someone hasn't come up with a couple grand for the bail bondsman.

I heard a story more than twenty years ago (it was an old story even then) - when such humor had much more toleration by public servants - a couple of clowns with a lot of time on their hands worked their asses off hauling a bunch of tires up a hill somewhere east of Barstow along the freeway and lit them on fire, then drove to a pay phone booth to call the radio station about a volcano erupting.

Don't know the end game of that one...
