Officer arrested for alleged immigrant smuggling

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A New Mexico police officer has been arrested at a San Diego border crossing for allegedly attempting to cross into the U.S. with an illegal immigrant.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Jackie Dizdul says Bosque Farms police Officer Ronald Haley was arrested Friday after an inspection at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
Dizdul says Haley drove up to the checkpoint in a Chevy Tahoe with a female passenger. Dizdul says Haley presented a Mexican border crossing card for the woman that actually belonged to her sister. Authorities determined the woman had no legal documents to enter the U.S.
Haley is being held at the San Diego Metropolitan Correction Center as he awaits federal charges.

I cannot even think of what punishment that officer deserves. It should be severe.

I'd like to see more information on this before I got too excited about it.

What was the officer's relationship with the woman he was crossing with?

There could be a lot of extenuating circumstances that make him innocent.

He's not the first to do this and he won't be last.

There is no circumstance that can make him INNOCENT. Forget his relationship with her, he did it.

If you know something not posted above that assures his guilt, you should share it.

Meanwhile, it's good to hear they caught the guy and are prosecuting him for aiding and abetting. He will get a trial. Obviously, the woman is guilty. Why aren't we hearing more about her? Has she been arrested? She's the real guilty one and she needs to be prosecuted, jailed and deported. He is more likely to be an innocent bystander than she is, yet we are not obliged to get excited about her, just the police officer.

If the guy was a border patrol agent, then he would be completely unqualified as a dupe in this case. He would be guilty and no further evidence would be required for me.

Since Arizona is a border state and so much of the state is close to the border, state and local law enforcement should be as well trained on the border as federal border agents.

Does Arizona have its own border patrol or is that all federal?

You are truly unbelievable. The post was about the antics of the police officer. The woman is another story and I will trust they attend to her also.
I have to agree with a post a few days ago, you will argue with anything.
HOPE THEY JAIL THE BUM.

Antics? What antics? Did he make a scene or something? There's nothing in the report you posted saying anything about antics or anything at all about the behavior of the guy.

If you know something else about the incident, why not share it?

BF detective arrested in California
A Bosque Farms police detective is in a California jail for trying to enter the United States with an illegal immigrant, federal officials said.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers on Friday stopped Ronald Lewis Haley, 41, at the San Ysidro, Calif., port of entry with a Mexican female passenger.
San Ysidro sits south of San Diego and north of Tijuana, Mexico.
Haley presented valid travel documents as well as a Mexican border crossing card for the woman, according to a CBP news release. A Customs officer determined the crossing card belonged to the woman's sister and that the woman did not have legal documents to enter the United States, the release said.
According to a probable cause statement filed in federal court in California, the passenger said Haley had made arrangements for her to live with him and his girlfriend in Albuquerque. She also said Haley offered her a job doing security and cleaning services for an Albuquerque company he owns.
Haley was arrested and is being held at the San Diego Metropolitan Correctional Center.
"There is no profile of what a smuggler looks like, so our officers have to expect to encounter anything. It is disheartening to see a police officer taken away in handcuffs to face charges," said Chris Maston, Port Director at the San Ysidro port of entry, in the release. "Spotting an imposter to a legal document is a difficult task, but one that officers here at San Ysidro perform countless times a day. I am extremely proud of the diligence of my officers."
Before his job with the Bosque Farms department, Haley was police chief in Tucumcari and Cuba.
Bosque Farms Police Chief Joe Stidham said Haley has been placed on unpaid administrative leave, and a determination on his employment would be made soon once the details of the case emerge.
He said the department had no idea Haley had been arrested, and only found out when he failed to show up for work Friday.
"He's been a great police officer for us," Stidham said. "When he was hired, he had no criminal background, and he's well known in the New Mexico law enforcement community."

Lt. stopped at U.S. border used business as a cover-up
A New Mexico policeman accused of smuggling an illegal immigrant into the country now has another problem: a security company he claims to be running in Albuquerque may not be legally licensed in New Mexico.
Bosque Farms police lieutenant Ron Haley is listed as the owner of I.C.U. Security and Investigation, but state regulatory officials say he doesn't have a current license to operate the company.
Haley was arrested at the San Ysidro port of entry between San Diego and Tijuana last Friday.
Customs officers say he was bringing a woman with a bogus ID card into the U.S. to work as a cleaning lady at his security company.
State regulators say Haley applied for a renewed license after his old one expired, but they have not issued that new license.
Industry rivals and watchdogs, like Robb Hamic of Austin, Texas, say Haley's questionable business is nothing new.
"I have been making complaints to law enforcement, Licensing and Regulation, and really anyone who would listen for over two years," said Hamic. "It's about his illegal practices in security, the general violation of ethics standards, him being a law enforcement agent."
Hamic is a former Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputy who owns security companies in Albuquerque and Austin.
Haley is in federal custody in San Diego. Bosque Farms police say he's on unpaid leave while federal agents conduct their investigation.
State Licensing and Regulation officials say they do not have any current complaints filed about Haley and I.C.U. Security.

Former Tucumcari officer accused of trying to smuggle illegal immigrant
A former Tucumcari police chief was arrested Friday and accused of trying to smuggle an illegal immigrant into the U.S.
Ronald Lewis Haley was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Ysidro port near San Diego, according to a border patrol press release.
Haley, 41, was hired as the deputy police chief of Tucumcari on Oct. 6, 2007. He served as interim chief of police from July 13, 2007, following the resignation of Larry Ham.
At the time of his arrest, Haley was a member of the Bosque Farms Police Department near Albuquerque.
Border patrol agents said Haley drove up to the San Ysidro port of entry with a female passenger in a Chevy Tahoe with New Mexico plates.
Haley presented his valid travel documents, and presented a Mexican border crossing card for his female passenger, the release stated.
The CBP officer suspected the document did not belong to the female passenger, and referred the car and occupants for a more thorough inspection, according to the release.
Officers said they discovered the document actually belonged to the woman’s sister, and the woman did not have any legal documents to enter the U.S.
According to the release, Haley was being held at the San Diego Metropolitan Correctional Center awaiting charges brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego.
“There is no profile of what a smuggler looks like, so our officers have to expect to encounter anything. It is disheartening to see a police officer taken away in handcuffs to face charges,” said Chris Maston, Port Director at the San Ysidro port of entry. “Spotting an impostor to a legal document is a difficult task, but one that officers here at San Ysidro perform countless times a day. I am extremely proud of the diligence of my officers.”
