Default 11-Year-Old Girl Gang Raped in California Park Bathroom

11-Year-Old Girl Gang Raped in California Park Bathroom
Authorities have captured a 19-year-old California man they say is responsible, along with six others, for the gang rape of an 11-year-old girl inside a park bathroom.
Michael Sykes, a suspected gang member, was arrested Monday morning at a Moreno Valley home, police sources confirm to FoxNews.com.
Police allege that Sykes, along with six juvenile gang members, raped the child in the bathroom at Moreno Valley's Victoriano Park between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. March 10, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise.
The attack, which was on the south side of the city near Moreno Valley College, wasn't made public until Sunday, and police have not released further details about the incident.
"As a father — even as a police officer — there are crimes that shock us. This is one of them," Capt. John Anderson, chief of the Moreno Valley station, said.
Detectives told the newspaper that the girl was at a shopping center near the park when she was approached by an older girl, who lured her to the bathroom where the six boys and the 19-year-old were waiting.
The attack was in an area where gangs and crime aren't a problem, Anderson said.
The six juveniles were arrested shortly after the rape and booked at Riverside County juvenile hall for investigation of sexual assault on a child. Sykes eluded authorities until his arrest Monday.
Authorities have so far not released the named of the teens because they are minors. Police sources, however, say the boys are all over 14 and could charged as adults.

Police: Older girl lured child to gang rape
The last suspect connected to the gang rape of an 11-year-old girl earlier this month was arrested Monday by investigators, who said an older girl lured the victim to a Moreno Valley park restroom where the crime took place.
Michael Sykes, 19, was arrested Monday morning at a home in Moreno Valley. A known gang member, Sykes was the only adult investigators believe participated in the March 10 rape of the girl. The other seven arrested are juveniles.
Sykes is originally from Los Angeles, investigators said. He has no prior criminal record, according to Riverside County Court records and investigators said he may not have led the rape.
Another girl, who police identified as a gang affiliate, saw the 11-year-old at a shopping center at Iris and Lassalle avenues at about 6 p.m. and they went to Victoriano Park together. The older girl lured the victim into a restroom at Victoriano Park where Sykes and six boys, also gang members, were waiting, police said.
The victim returned to the shopping center about 9 p.m. and reported the attack to police, who believe the girl was a random victim.
"It appears they were looking for a victim and lured her back to the waiting males," said Lt. Chad Bianco, who oversees investigators at the Moreno Valley sheriff's station. "I don't know about motivation. I just want to say that it looks like that gang lifestyle and gang activity."
The girl who brought her to the park in southern Moreno Valley and the boys were arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and booked into Juvenile Hall. Police have not identified the juvenile suspects or released their criminal histories because they are minors, but investigators said they are all older than 14 and could be charged as adults.
Sykes was charged with four felonies related to the rape, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department stated in a news release Monday evening.
The gang is based in Moreno Valley and has a history of other violent crimes, Bianco said.
As news of the rape spread Monday, Moreno Valley police were busy investigating two unrelated homicides elsewhere in the city.
Moreno Valley Mayor Richard Stewart said the city is safe and lauded detectives for making arrests in the rape investigation.
"The resources are out there, this isn't a crime wave," Stewart said. "Gang members are uncivilized people. They don't seem to have respect for human beings ... The fact that anyone could consider this behavior something a gang would be proud of, is beyond me."
Investigation guarded
Police waited two weeks to publicly announce the crime because they were still trying to locate Sykes and other suspects. Announcing the rape any earlier may have caused witnesses or the suspects to flee the area before the arrests were complete, Bianco said.
"Our biggest priority is solving this investigation and if we put out that we were looking for gang members, they'd go back to hide out," Bianco said. "We don't think there was any immediate danger to any other kids. We had to make sure we could ensure justice for this little 11-year-old girl."
Victoriano Park sits adjacent to Victoriano Elementary School, across the street from houses on Los Cabos Drive and just behind a subdivision. Posted hours show the park open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with lighting along the sidewalks.
The small park, less than 100 yards from the school, is at the end of a soccer field and is made up of picnic tables and grill pits. The restrooms where the crime took place are about 50 feet from houses on the other side of a brick wall.
Parents cautioned
Monday morning, several parents were still unaware of the attack more than two weeks ago. Susie Rice and her 9-year-old daughter Amanda rode bikes through the park. She said the community should have been told of the incident immediately.
"It's horrifying," Rice said. "I don't see how nobody could have stopped that."
Rice planned to continue to visit the park but said she never lets her daughter go anywhere alone.
The rape serves as a reminder for girls not to walk alone and to be aware of their surrounding, Bianco said. He added that parents should play a major role in supervising their children at all times. He called the rape part of the "idiotic gang mentality."
"I don't think in any way it could have been prevented. There are always victims and people preying on victims," Bianco said.
"I absolutely refuse to believe parents don't know their kids are in a gang. It's despicable and shocking to think parents would allow their kids to be part of this," he said.

Gang rape victim, 11, mentally disabled
An 11-year-old girl gang raped last month in a Moreno Valley park was developmentally disabled, with the mental capacity of a 5-year-old, newly released court documents reveal.
A Moreno Valley police search warrant obtained Friday also showed that at least part of the attack by a man and six boys was videotaped on a cell phone and that the victim had been lured to the park from a nearby middle school.
The girl was able to identify one of her attackers by his tattoos, and she was able to identify the older girl who lured her to the park from Vista Verde Middle School, according to the warrant. Police initially said she was lured from a shopping center.
"This type of crime is as horrible as it gets. It shocks even the most experienced officer," said Moreno Valley Police Chief John Anderson. "I think what really makes it more shocking is it involves so many juveniles. I find that disturbing."
Police served the warrant April 7 to collect video and photo evidence from one suspect's cell phone, but it had been deleted and could not be retrieved.
They learned of the video while interviewing Phillip Butler, 16, who is charged in the attack. Butler told them that another boy who was arrested had filmed at least 10 minutes of the attack, which occurred between 3 and 6:30 p.m. March 14 at Victoriano Park in southeastern Moreno Valley.
On the cell phone, police found several pictures of gang members and were searching for text messages sent before and after the attack, according to the warrant.
Michael Sykes, 19, and four of the boys are charged with rape, sodomy and lewd acts with a child to benefit a criminal street gang, the Southside Mafia.
Sykes also is charged with kidnapping to commit rape, which could bring a life sentence. He has pleaded not guilty and bail has been set at $1 million. He is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in downtown Riverside.
The others charged are Butler, Dominique Dupree Hull, 15, and brothers Javonte Marquise Dixon and Johntae Maurice Dixon, both 17. The boys also denied the charges.
They are due back in juvenile court Monday where officials will present a report looking at whether they should be tried as adults. They are each being held at Riverside Juvenile Hall.
Prosecutors are not seeking adult charges against the older girl and two other boys arrested in the case, including the boy who filmed the attack.
ATTACK DETAILED
According to police, the older girl met the victim in front of the middle school and led her to a shopping center and then to the park. Butler told detectives that Hull grabbed the girl by the arm as he led her with the other boys into the men's restroom.
The boy who recorded the rape was later arrested. He was laughing and joking while questioned by officers, according to the warrant.
He denied he was a gang member. Other suspects said he was bragging about videotaping the gang rape on his phone.
The girl reported the attack to police at a shopping center about 9 p.m. She was given a rape examination and was found with several injuries. She first identified Sykes through a photo lineup when she recognized tattoos on his arms and shoulders.
Five other warrants were served April 7 at various homes in Moreno Valley in connection with the attack.
Police have said the Southside Mafia gang was started in Moreno Valley and that it has a history of burglaries, marijuana sales and physical assaults.
DISABLED PROVE MORE VULNERABLE
A disabled rape victim might not have the ability or instinct to fight back, said Larry McAdara, executive director of the Riverside Rape Crisis Center.
The mentally disabled can be prone to more sexual assaults by predators because they may not understand the danger or be able to put the sexual assault in context, he explained.
"They do not see the threat coming. They do not understand what's happening," McAdara said. "Assaults are always about power, control and humiliation."
McAdara said the public needs to be informed of these types of rapes, because the public is at risk.
"When you think of someone who might do this, it says the very worst thing about humanity," he said.
