Default Congress to address 'anchor baby' issue?

Congress to address 'anchor baby' issue?
Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 12/10/2010 4:05:00 AM
A Republican congressman says the new Congress will hold a series of hearings on the issue of "anchor babies" as it works to end the controversial practice of awarding automatic citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants.

The Republicans have already promised that when they take control of the House in January, they will conduct a series of hearings on a number of issues.

Representative Steve King (R-Iowa), who currently chairs the House Subcommittee on Immigration, wants to change the focus from the Democrats' agenda of rewarding illegal aliens with the DREAM Act ("The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act") to closing the loophole in the 14th Amendment that allows illegal alien mothers to sneak across the border, deliver their babies, then reap the benefits of giving birth to American citizens.
King says this practice has become something of an epidemic as upwards of 750,000 babies are born every year to illegal mothers on U.S. soil.

"This is uncontrolled immigration. It's rewarding illegals who sneak into the United States, and we can fix it by statute," he explains. "We don't have to amend the Constitution. The clause in there -- 'subject to the jurisdiction thereof' -- is the clause that we apply. We can just pass a law that says we're not going to give automatic citizenship to the babies born to illegal mothers, because those [women] are not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States," the Republican lawmaker suggests. "They're subject to the jurisdiction of some foreign country -- whatever their home country is."

But with Barack Obama still in the White House and Democrats still in control of the Senate, King admits the anchor baby problem is not likely to be alleviated until the next election cycle.
