Default Naturalized Kosovo Albanian plots terrorist attack

The aftermath of America’s involvement in the Kosovo conflict is felt a decade later, but it isn’t only in war-torn Serbia where the fruits of NATO’s labors are displayed.

Radical Islamists from Kosovo who blame America for the deaths of thousands of Muslims worldwide now are plotting terrorist attacks on US soil.

A 25-year-old naturalized US citizen from Kosovo is in police custody after federal agents thwarted a terrorism plot in Florida that the would-be culprit wanted to be “terrifying.” Sami Osmakac from Pinellas Park, FL was arrested Saturday night after authorities intercepted his attempt at a massive attack on US soil. According to a taped statement from Osmakac, the planned events would serve as “payback” for wrongdoings to Muslims carried out at the hands of America.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s sting on Osmakac comes less than a year after 21-year-old Arid Uka from Kosovo opened fire at the Frankfurt Airport in Germany, killing two US soldiers and wounding two others. Investigators in that case allege that Uka came clean on the charges and insisted that the attack was retaliation for crimes committed against Muslims by American forces.

TAMPA, Fla. — A Kosovo-born man was charged with plotting to attack Tampa-area nightclubs and a sheriff's office with bombs and an assault rifle to avenge wrongs done to Muslims, federal authorities said Monday.

According to a federal complaint, 25-year-old Sami Osmakac recorded an eight-minute video shortly before his arrest explaining why he wanted to bring terror to his "victims' hearts" in the Tampa Bay area. Osmakac is a naturalized American citizen born in Kosovo, then part of the former Yugoslavia in eastern Europe.

In the video, Osmakac is seen cross-legged on the floor with a pistol in his hand and an AK-47 behind him. Osmakac said in the video that Muslim blood was more valuable than that of people who do not believe in Islam, according to the complaint. He said he wanted "payback" for wrong that was done to Muslims, according to the complaint.

There is no indication that Osmakac planned to attack the Republican National Convention, which will be held in Tampa in August, federal authorities said.

Osmakac's aunt lives in a two-story house in a remote hillside in Kosovo's southwest bordering Albania. She said her nephew's family left the secluded hamlet of Lubizde in the early 1990s for Bosnia where Sami's father ran a bakery. Kosovo was then part of the now defunct Yugoslavia.

The family was caught in the whirlwind of Yugoslavia's violent breakup during the 1990's. They moved initially to Germany and then to the United States. The Lubizde area was hard hit during the 1998-99 Kosovo war, when ethnic Albanians fought a separatist war against Serbia that ended with U.S.-led military intervention in Kosovo.

Over the years, Sami Osmakac's family "helped us a lot and frequently sent money," the aunt said, nervously clutching her robe as her daughter looked on. "We had no idea that he had any troubles or anything like that."

She added that Sami Osmakac was last in Kosovo in October 2011, but that she learned of his visit from neighbors and that he did not contact her or other relatives.

Osmakac was arrested Saturday — the day officials said he was planning his attack — after he allegedly bought explosive devices and firearms from an undercover agent. The firearms and explosives were disabled before the sale.
