Default Illegals Populating Washington State Town

U.S. Border Patrol Agent Chris Dyer walks through a forested area near Forks, Wash., Thursday, March 17, 2011 to show a reporter where he once pursued an immigrant accused of stabbing a man to death in a fight. Relations between the immigrant population of Forks -- many who work in the surrounding forests -- and the Border Patrol have been strained for many months, and tensions have increased due to the recent death of an immigrant who was trying to evade a Border Patrol

"We talk about Arizona, Texas and the southern border...it's here. It's in our backyard," said Forks Mayor Bryon Monohon, about immigration enforcement efforts in his town. "It really is just an atmosphere of fear."

Quote:
...According to the sheriff's office, Forest Service and Border Patrol, Salinas and a woman were returning from a day harvesting salal. They were stopped by a Forest Service officer, who then called the Border Patrol.

Forest Service spokeswoman Donna Nemeth said the officer suspected Salinas and the woman were harvesting salal illegally. When a Border Patrol officer arrived, Salinas ran and was chased.

"It's not uncommon to request translation (many of the immigrants are Spanish speakers) from the nearest available resource. And in this case it was the Border Patrol," said Nemeth.

Salinas was last seen jumping into the river...

...Benjamin Roldan Salinas, a forest worker in the country illegally, leapt into the frigid Sol Duc River to escape a pursuing U. S. Border Patrol Agent, disappearing into the fast-moving waters.

For more than three weeks, his family, friends and volunteers - including other illegal immigrants - scoured the dense forest along the swollen river's banks for any sign of him...

...a family friend spotted the 43-year-old Salinas' bloated, decomposing body entangled in roots downstream, according to the sheriff's report...

..."We did the best we could to try to come up with the individual," Border Patrol Spokesman Richard Sinks said. "It's not like we gave up on him and drove off with what we had. It's unfortunate and our heartfelt condolences go to his family and friends...
This is no one's fault but Salinas' own.

If he had not ran and jumped into the river, he might have been deported and alive somewhere in Latin America, or more likely released and still harvesting salal in Washington state.

But, he's dead as a consequence of his own decision.

Growing anything in a national forest without a permit is breaking the law.
it is O K for illegals to break the law. It is their right.

I'm not sure what you meant by this.

To begin with, Salinas was here illegally. That's a crime.

A Forest Service LEO employee suspected Salinas and a woman of illegally harvesting (not growing) vegetation on Federal land which requires a permit to harvest, another illegal act.

The Forest Service employee couldn't communicate with Salinas and the woman, so the employee called the Border Patrol to provide an interpreter.

Once the Border Patrol agent, another LEO, arrived Salinas fled - another crime.

He jumped into the river and drowned, his own fault.

Perhaps what you are referring to is the federal program of "catch and release", which I alluded to in the post above. Or the fact that in 60% of cases, Federal immigration judges let illegal perps walk in America rather than deporting them.

How is this problem fixed?

There has to be a president who will enforce immigration law in it's fullest, after all Forest Service, Border Patrol, justice department, and Immigration judicial employees report to cabinet level White House personnel. And it wouldn't hurt to have congressmen in office who will eliminate funding for presidential pet programs and other action if the President doesn't have a policy of fully enforcing immigration law.

Don't you notice that a lot of people never take responsiblity for their own actions, it is always the fault of some one else.
