Anti-immigrant is a word in the American lexicon almost universally perceived to be a pro-open borders BS term. I've seen juries and television audiences alike react to it. In my experience, the fact that the other side often insists upon using it (not to mention the far less common undocumented citizen) immediately tips off to the listeners that they are being exposed to propoganda and bias.

Real simple, whether they have sympathy for them or not, everyone knows what an illegal alien is. Further, just about every one of these same people realize when they're referred to by a cleaned up term, they're hearing someone advocate for a specific point of view.

People who advocate for amnesty and rewards for illegal aliens currently in our country, commonly try to spin the subject matter they espouse. It has a fundamental ring of dishonesty that is perceived by people on the right and left alike, therefore, I think that's one of the reasons much of their rhetoric falls flat with American voters, and why the notions of the DREAM ACT and a "pathway to citizenship" have yet to gain much traction.
DA, I think you have been hanging out with too many reasoned people, and for far too long. I submit to you that there is a significant sector of America that hear the words "Immigrant", "Undocumented", or phrases like "Pathway to citizenship" and get all glossy-eyed and stand transfixed like a deer in headlights of a big rig barreling down a mountain roadway. They may understand that it's not natural, but they remain under the spell until the inevitable screech and accompanying vibration breaks the concentration.

Actually, most of my time is spent in the company of criminals.

Insofar as the substance of your assertion, we'll agree to disagree. Further, imploring folks on the Left to voluntarily stop using immigrant as a matter of intellectual honesty, and expecting results, is up there with waiting for Lou Dobbs to make his next television appearance on Dancing With The Stars.
