The DREAM Act, Gutiérrez says, is for now his final legislative maneuver. He’s finished waiting for the mythical 60th vote to materialize in the Senate. No, when the lame duck ends, Gutiérrez and his movement allies will ask for a divorce—from the Democratic Party, from the entire lawmaking process. To hear Gutiérrez tell it, Hispanic leaders are about to stage a full-tilt campaign of direct action, like the African-American civil-rights movement of the 1960s. There will be protests, marches, sit-ins—what César Chávez might have called going rogue. The movement will operate autonomously, no longer beholden to wavering Democrats, filibustering Republicans, and—perhaps most tantalizingly—no longer beholden to Barack Obama.

[Gutiérrez:] “When black people in this country decided they were going to fight for civil rights and for voting rights, they didn’t ask if the majority leader was with them and when they were going to tee up the bill. They said, ‘We’re sitting where we need to sit on the bus! We’re integrating this counter! We’re going to march!”

They're still riding on the coat tails of the African American civil rights movement. They have already sucked up all the gains of African Americans for assurances of basic welfare to advance the welfare of people who shouldn't even be here. He is forgetting that the Obamination himself is riding the same coat tails. Meanwhile, there isn't a real African American in sight anywhere in the whole mess.

When people like this begin to believe their own lies, you know their future doesn't look too good. Such a mobilization as Gutierrez describes could do a lot to push Democrats away from restraining enforcement against illegals. I'd like to see them do that.

The times might be different, but "they" tried this in the 60's and early 70's.

After all the Viva Kennedy election hoopla, "they" felt that the Democrats let them down again. So, concluding that the government was a two headed goat (Democrats and Republicans) of which the two heads fed from the same trough.

So, Jose Angel Gutierrez and his merry band of activists formed the La Raza Unida party and went door to door talking it up and registering voters, making sure that they stayed below the dominant political radar.

At first, it was spectacularly successful. They took over the school district, city hall, and county government. They fired all the whites and hired only Latinos, except where they needed expertise and the white hire was sympathetic to the "Latino" cause. They had the free medical consultation and all the rest, including a small farm cooperative.

Then, due to human nature and several lawsuits, it imploded. However, it is a model which has been used over the last 40 years to take over various governments and educational infrastructure from within the Democratic Party domain.

"They" protested en mass before the economic collapse and what did it get them? singed wings. Will "they" bring back the concept of a third party which is racial in nature? How will all this blatantly racial and ethnic activism play out to the larger American public since the corporations got bailed out but the working man is now running out of unemployment benefits?

Will Luis Gutierrez be able to pull the "divorce" off?

We'll just have to see.

They have also put the African American at the bottom of the manure pile just where they were in the days of George Wallace and Bull Connor.

Too true. The hispanic illegals whine and complain and African Americans are reduced to hawking candy and newspaper subscriptions in front of supermarkets. The only aspirations allowed to them, if any, are hip hop or basketball.
