SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- University of California president Mark Yudof says recent acts of racism and intolerance on its campuses have prompted UC to consider changing its policy on bias incidents.
In a March 29 letter to four state lawmakers, Yudof condemned the incidents, which included graffiti of swastikas and a noose found hanging from a library bookshelf. He said UC may expand its code of conduct to explicitly prohibit such acts.
Lawmakers had requested UC provide a detailed account of its policies on hateful acts.
The letter was released to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Yudof also provided a tally of vandalism incidents involving hate speech. Over the past five years, 115 episodes have occurred across UC's 10 campuses. Only four suspects have been identified.
