That is exactly what happened to a friend of mine about 2 months ago. That person was in contact with the supposed to be friend in England and needed money to get home. Thing was the friend asking for help was an eldery person who had been in the hospital just a few days before. Since it was someone who ask for computer help etc, the person opened the email. Another thing is I get email from people who have what looks to be their entire email address book. They should use the Bcc so they do not give everyones email out.

International scam.
AG:
Many months ago I received an E-mail purportedly sent to me by Christopher Strunk who I know and who lives in Brooklyn, NY. It was the exact same message word for word. I E-mailed Christopher about it because I know him and I was skeptical. He E-mailed me right back and sure enough he was in Brooklyn, not in England broke and soliciting emergency funds. He is always involved in court cases, political matter, law suits. He contacted a retired NYC police detective friend and they set up a sting operation. I researched the name and address of the town where the E-mail said he was supposed to be stuck. Using Google Earth I found the address. It was a little Village in Central England, not London. Of course it was phony. I also reported the scam to the New York FBI and I think Christopher was in contact with them. I really haven't hear about the outcome but I did learn that there are very large International gangs pulling these scams all the time. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> On Saturday September 18, 2010 while I was out fishing with my son, on his boat in the Atlantic Ocean, someone sent out the web address of - " Canadian Health and Care On Line, Kingston, Ontario ", using my E-mail address. They apparently hacked into my E-mail contacts list. I received back from my provider 33 - "delivery status notifications" - ( failure ). Some failed and some went through. The scammer kept on trying and punched through my security. I received back complaint from recipients and that tipped me off. I E-mailed the Canadians on their "scam" contact and wrote to them. I also phoned my service provider MSN. They said it is a very widespread problem that occurs frequently. The tech support rep guided me through a procedure that he says works to prevent further incidents. I then E-mailed everyone on my contact list about the Canadians. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Addendum: Just announced on Fox news: Twitter was hacked this morning at 9:00 AM A "bug" was planted in Twitter accounts that affected thousands. It apparently sent out messages, redirected to other websites *( including porn ) and caused other problems. It wasn't even necessary to click on the bug, just dragging the mouse arrow over it was sufficient to activate it. Twitter found the security breach and "fixed" it by 10:00 AM Last edited by wetibbe; 09-21-2010 at 08:19 AM. |

I purposefully don't maintain an email contact list just for such reasons.
