SoCal city suspends day labor law
The Associated Press 03/02/2010 LOS ANGELES—Civil rights groups say the Southern California city of Costa Mesa has suspended enforcement of a ban on day labor solicitation pending appellate review of a similar law. A court order released Tuesday by The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California also says proceedings in a lawsuit filed on behalf of laborers are stayed pending a decision on a Redondo Beach law by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal. The lawsuit against Costa Mesa claims First Amendment violations. It was filed by the ACLU, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the National Day Labor Organizing Network. Calls seeking comment from city officials and the city's lawyer were not immediately returned Tuesday. City leaders were in a closed council session Tuesday evening.
