The United States was certainly created by Christians, although many of influence in the American Revolution were not. Furthermore, many of the peoples who founded the first colonies that later became the states were of religions that no longer exist, like the Shakers.

The people who founded the United State may have based the choices they made on their own Christianaity, but if they felt that the job of the United States was to be a Christian nation, they would have codified that more explicitly in the Constitution. There arguments for religion were always based on religious freedom, not religious enforcement.

But even though this country was founded to allow people to practice the religion of their choice, those people who founded it based that freedom on certain principles not accepted by many religions back then and those same religions continue to reject those principles. For too many people on this planet, freedom of conscience is still a forbidden and incomprehensible concept.
