The killings weren't at all senseless. They make perfect sense.

If a group is training killers, there is almost no way to do that except by killing. Preferably someone innocent and helpless. Someone who would normally be sympathetic.

Gang initiations in the US have the same requirements. That's why apparently senseless yet brutal slayings are chalked up to gang initiations. This wasn't an initiation but a training exercise designed to desensitize the killers.
