Fremont, Neb., city council president resigns
FREMONT, Neb. (AP) - The president of Fremont's city council, which has been embroiled in a 2-year debate over illegal immigration, has resigned.
Gary Bolton announced his resignation Thursday morning, three days after voters approved an ordinance to ban hiring or renting property to illegal immigrants.
Fellow Councilman Scott Getzschman says Bolton called him Thursday morning to make Getzschman aware of his plan to step down.
In a news release, Bolton cited "a number of community issues" in the past year that have taken a physical and emotional toll on him.
A message left Thursday for Bolton was not immediately returned.
