Small boat hits reef; passengers flee scene
Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 1:18 a.m.

OCEAN BEACH: A small boat that witnesses said was carrying about 20 people struck a reef near the Ocean Beach pier early Christmas Day and was abandoned by its occupants.

San Diego lifeguards and police, as well as U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents, responded to the area but failed to find anyone.

The 24-foot vessel ran onto the reef just south of the pier about 5:30 a.m. Friday, lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma said. Witnesses said the people on board got out of the craft in knee-deep water, walked ashore and disappeared.

Authorities found gas cans in the boat and life jackets on shore, Lerma said.

This is why they are called wetb@cks. They sure didn't come ashore dry.
