Miami (AP) -- Honduran activist Jose Lagos, who championed the rights of Central American and other immigrants from South Florida to the halls of Congress, has died.

Lagos, 45, passed away Sunday of cancer at a Miami hospital, his friend and fellow activist Nora Sandigo said.

Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen praised Lagos' efforts on behalf of a 1997 law that helped Central Americans gain U.S. citizenship. Lagos also worked to get temporary status for Central Americans illegally in the U.S. following a string of natural disasters in that region.

He died as Hondurans elected a new leader, ending months of unrest following the ouster of their president. Ros-Lehtinen called it fitting Lagos died on a day of such importance to his fellow Hondurans.
