Three Arrested in Cartel's Alleged Murder-for-Hire Plot Targeting Victims in California
Three suspects were arrested Thursday in California in what the state attorney general said was a foiled murder-for-hire plot commissioned by a Tijuana drug cartel and targeting victims living in the state.
Special agents seized more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, an estimated $20,000 in cash and two assault weapons during an early morning raid at a Palmdale, Calif., residence.
"This case sends a message to the border drug cartels trying to do business here: Justice will be swift and certain when you cross into California," Attorney General Kamala Harris said in a news release. "I applaud our agents and law enforcement partners for their good work in uncovering and thwarting this murder-for-hire plot."
The agents arrested Jorge Ernesto Sillas-Rocha and Victor Manuel Magana Gonzalez on charges of conspiracy and murder-for-hire while conducting the early morning raid. They later arrested Daniel Ceballos at a Starbuck's coffee shop in Palmdale on unspecified charges.
A fourth suspect, Juan Francisco Sillas-Rocha, otherwise known as “Ruedas,” also is expected to face charges in the case. He reportedly is a leader of a drug trafficking gang responsible for violent murders in Mexico.
Investigators identified Ruedas as directing the murder of five family members who reportedly owe his cartel large sums of money. He was willing to pay thousands in return for the murders.
