A Mexican (of course) woman gets asylum in the US because she was beaten by her partner and the mexican government cannot protect her.

What makes this case remarkable is that traditionally asylum has been given to individuals being persecuted by a government; applicants had to show they suffered persecution because of their religion, political beliefs, race, nationality or membership in a particular social group.

Cases such as L.R.'s increase the scope of who may qualify for asylum by expanding the definition of "particular social group." Women who have suffered genital mutilation, or in L.R.'s case, domestic abuse, have been recently deemed "social groups" and granted asylum.

This is something like the recent court decision which which can be interpreted to qualify the whole female population of Guatemala for asylum entry into the US due to the high murder rate of women there.

The decision doesn't take into account that the murder rate of Guatemalan men is much higher than the murder rate of Guatemalan women.

So... fill in the blanks, connect the dots.

It's been a month or three since this came out, and I'm not going to look it up now. However, it was in a number of So Cal papers if one wants to see for one's self.
