Police hunt for escaped illegal immigrant

POLICE and immigration officials are searching for a man who escaped immigration detention while on an excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium last week.
The incident is among a spate of recent escapes from immigration detention centres.
A Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) spokesman said the man was on a supervised visit to the aquarium, in central Melbourne, when he slipped away.
"I can tell you that a male detainee from the Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre escaped during a supervised excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium on March 24.
"Victoria Police were alerted with the assistance of the department (DIAC) and efforts continue to locate him."
The spokesman, who declined to be named, would not confirm details of the man's nationality or the reason he had been detained, citing privacy reasons and said he could not give a description of the wanted man.
But it is understood the man is a Chinese national.
