An email I received today:
Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R) Utah http://chaffetz.house.gov/ is the author of HR 1026, which seeks to "prevent" illegal aliens from entering and residing in the United States. Read the text at the end of this email. FIVE CONGRESS MEMBERS SIGNED ONTO H RES 1026 YESTERDAY - HIGHLIGHTED IN RED BELOW. NOTE: Congressman "Buck" McKeon (R) CA, added his name as a co-sponsor yesterday. Congressman McKeon's district, Santa Clarita, is staging a rally this Saturday to oppose amnesty - did this pressure from his constituents influence his signing/co-sponsoring HR 1026 yesterday?

The answer is YES, this upcoming rally has that town in an uproar and they're letting both their city council and McKeon know that they better do something.

Wow!!!! Thanks for posting this Jean. Another source has it that the Santa Clarita rally is being sponsored by McKeon. How did that happen?

Nathan Imhoff: More empty words from Gitlin
SCV Voices

POSTED Feb. 26, 2010 4:55 a.m.

"If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all." - Noam Chomsky

While observing all the talking, shouting and letters to the editor in recent days on the topic of free speech, I was reminded of the many chats I had with my dad in our family garage while I was growing up.

One particular discussion stuck with me, when he explained his service in the Marines protected people's freedom to burn the American flag, but also protected his right to tell them they are wrong.

My dad understood, that anyone can support speech they like, but it takes a real man or woman to support speech you hate. What an amazing country we live in, allowing its citizens the freedom of thought and expression.

SCV Independent Minuteman member Roger Gitlin and the Save our State crowd are prime examples of what Samuel Johnson so eloquently stated: "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."

Even 250 years ago, Johnson saw though the manipulation of self-proclaimed plastic patriots such as those who believe dressing in red, white and blue and waving American flags automatically makes their position somehow more American than others.

I found it hilarious that Gitlin took so literally the satiric comments in my Feb. 6 column ("Fewer signs, more thoughts are needed") that he felt compelled to address them individually.

It was odd, however, when he publicly claimed not to engage in a war of words and instead enticed his followers to do his dirty work of sending in letters complaining to our friends at The Signal for him.

Just a few days before the publishing of Gitlin's Feb. 14 column, Save Our State launched a campaign to harass The Signal and hinder its freedom of press, not to mention attempt to get the "little bias SOB" reporter Jonathan Randles fired. One would think self-proclaimed patriots believe in Randles' freedom of speech and The Signal's freedom of press.

I couldn't help but think of John Locke's gem, "I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts," after observing Gitlin the past few days.

I think he missed his calling as a used-car salesman, as he attempts to sell the clunker of another Minutemen rally to the fair citizens of Santa Clarita. Gitlin does his best to paint his beloved Minutemen as Boy Scouts, claiming they are a "multinational group that abides by the rule of law and whose members pledge a code of conduct."

Big surprise: This all-powerful code of conduct didn't stop the various documented physical threats various Santa Clarita citizens received during a previous rally, did it Mr. Gitlin?

It also didn't stop Frank Jorge from making a sexually discriminating rant which was removed from The Signal's Web site because of its vulgarity and content.

Even the bankrupt energy juggernaut Enron had a code of conduct stating: "We are dedicated to conducting business according to all applicable local and international laws and regulations." I doubt they went with the "we have a code of conduct" defense in court.

Gitlin goes further to say, "no participant shall spew or act out any racially derogatory sentiment." I am beginning to question whether he is aware people are recording these rallies and putting them on the Internet.

The Save Our State crowd has a history of blowing into peaceful communities like Santa Clarita and bringing with them other unwanted, outside extremist group opposition - creating a spectacular three-ring circus full of clowns pointing video cameras at each other, and screaming emotional, irrational nonsense.

Just ask the small Ventura County town of Ojai, whose residents eventually got fed up and showed these guys the door. This is why I found particularly rich Gitlin's criticism of the wingnuts at Full Rights for Immigration Coalition busing in their bleeding hearts from Los Angeles, considering he has been working overtime to build his own plastic patriot brigade. Yeehaw!

The fact of the matter is, The Signal has shown great maturity in handling the attacks that Gitlin has provoked against it. It has shown immense grace in allowing Gitlin to publish an extra-large, 1,000-word column that came up just as empty as all the other letters to the editor offering no viable solutions.

He just echoed all the same illogical "red herring" fallacies that criticize people in the community who are powerless to do anything about the illegal immigration problems here in the Santa Clarita Valley.

If California is powerless to enact its own solution, what makes him think small communities like Santa Clarita have an ice cube's chance in hell? How about more solutions and fewer bullhorns, Gitlin?

Alfred Whitney Griswold said: "In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost. The only weapon against bad ideas is better ideas."

Nathan Imhoff is a Newhall resident. His column reflects his own views and not necessarily those of The Signal.

Josh:
I am really surprised at you. I did not know you would allow The Signal to be a the vehicle to deliver personal attacks and outright lies against an individual. Is that appropriate?

I just finished reading Nathan Imhoff on More Empty Words from Gitlin, 2/26/2010

His personal attacks are chronic and on going and I am frankly surprised the Signal would continue to allow him an avenue to spread his vitriol.. What point was he making? What was his opinion?

I have stated absolutely and without equivocation that I have not attempted or directed anybody to have Jonathan Randles fired for his news article on an illegal alien's plight in coming to America, front page Signal, come weeks back. The Paper allowed Imhoff to incorrectly represent his viewpoint that I was somehow responsible for a movement to attempt to have Johnathan Randles fired. That is a straight out lie !! I even wrote a letter to the editor praising Randles and Lowery for their fair and impartial approach to this hot button issue of ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

Lila, I am particular surprised at you for allowing this one subject rant by Imhoff. Once, many months back, you stated to me all I write about is illegal immigration, when, in fact I opined on various subjects. Can I expect these continued attacks on me WITHOUT MY OPPORTUNITY TO RETORT ?

I have stated many times the solutions as I see it to the problem of illegal immigration. It fradulent when Imhoff states that Minutemen offer no viable solutions.

I appreciate Mr Imhoff is the media darling of the Signal (when he praises you ad naseum in your perceived fairness in my 1,000 word column, We can make a Change.) I can't believe he counted the words.

Come on Josh, take the issue of illegal immigration off personality attacks and put it on subject matter.

Why don't you straight out interview me, one on one, and find out exactly what I am about.

Roger Gitlin, Teacher
Santa Clarita Valley Independent Minutemen.

Nice job, Nathan Imhoff. You’ve got them rattled.

It’s clear that Gitlin and his group are on their PR campaign, and of course using the media to create exposure for their agenda.

Notice how Gitlin tries to turn Imhoff’s Op-Ed into a media opportunity for himself?

The southern California “Save Our State” chapter shut down November 2009. And so the northern California chapter has taken over the entire state.

And they are looking for press. These Nativist Extemist groups have very small memberships, so they have created a network of like-minded groups to work together to promote their agendas.

They have asked anyone within a five-hour drive of Santa Clarita to attend Saturday’s rally.

Also, notice how these rallys are held in front of the nice, safe Sheriffs station. On city land, no less. It looks like the city and the county condone these activities.

By the way, Imhoff’s satire on the moustaches was apt; whenever I read about Minutemen and the like, I always think of rootin’ tootin’ Yosemite Sam, shootin’ up the town.

JeanfromFillmore and Eagle1 did another great job of rally organizing. The speakers were an eclectic mix, we got relatively well-behaved goons, the conversations were spirited and the weather royally sucked.

I'll say more later, right now I'm processing/editing video. Here are the first two clips I have to offer:

There is another thread about picking up illegal alien trash at the border.

http://www.saveourstate.info/showthread.php?t=1112

The should have been in Santa Clarita yesterday to pick up the illegal alien trash shown in your video.

Years ago there was a futuristic movie entitled Soylent Green, staring Charleton Heston and Edward G. Robinson. The theme was industrial poisoning of the planet and destruction of the food chain by industrial waste, global warming, blah, blah, blah. It turns out that "Soylent Green", a synthetic food, is manufactured out of people.:( (Yeah...think about that when you're standing in line at your Taco stand. Did Pedro tie one on the night before and slip on a greasy spot on the floor coming into work the next morning and fall into the meat processing machine before punching in? :()

Well people are rioting because of food shortages, and some one yells out "The Scoops!! They're sending the scoops!"""

Well these big skip loaders pull up and scoop the rowdy mob into big bins and take them away. Now that's one way we could deal with illegals. Just scoop 'em up and ship them to a large industrial plant that transforms them into food... We could ship it to Haiti or something.

Also there was a minor cult movie called Eating Raoul, a Paul Bartel film where a Hispanic hustler named "Roual" collected the bodies of murder victims and sold them to a dog food manufacturer. (It was King Dog Food, I think. Arrrffff!) At the end of the movie, his accomplices murder him and serve him up in a casserole as they dine with a real estate broker who's going to help them buy a new business...a resturant.

"Ummm" , he says as he chows down and smacks his lips hungrily. "Is this French?"

"No,"says the wife. "It's mostly Spanish."

It comes up This video is private.

Yeah, it took on that status last night. It was public and available when I clicked on it. It's just as well because there was something wrong with the camera of the guy who did the filming. I was on the last fifteen or twenty seconds of what he shot and looked like a balding middle-aged guy with a protruding stomach.

Some tense moments at anti-illegal immigration rally, but no violence

We The People founder and spokesperson Raymond Herrera points to a counterprotest as he speaks at an anti illegal immigration rally held at the corner of Valencia Boulevard and Magic Mountain Parkway on Saturday.

Demonstrators waved signs, politicians gave speeches and motorists honked in agreement at a Valencia street corner Saturday as a rally against illegal immigration drew some opposition, but no violence erupted during the heavily policed event.

"We're trying to protect the sovereignty of the nation before it turns into the Third World," said James Stepman, 44, one of about 75 people who turned out for the Save Our State rally despite the rain.

"People here are not haters or racists, but the media are trying to stereotype us," said Stepman, of Topanga Canyon.

Organizers urged supporters within a five-hour drive of Valencia to join in the rally on the corner of Valencia Boulevard and Magic Mountain Parkway.

Participants held signs that read "Amnesty would cost at least a trillion $$," "Create local jobs! Enforce immigration and employment laws" and "We support legal immigration." Organized by Save Our State, a group opposed to illegal immigration, the rally drew people from a number of like-minded groups.

It was the second such event staged in Santa Clarita within two months. At a January rally, comments from Santa Clarita Councilman Bob Kellar in support of one flag and one language drew a firestorm of criticism from immigrant-rights groups and some others but an outpouring of support from local residents.

Saturday's event, which began shortly after a cloudburst and was dampened about an hour and a half later by more rain, attracted about 25-30 counter-demonstrators who marched and chanted on Valencia Boulevard, carrying signs that read "Unity against racism. No KKK/SOS." Some of their signs were in Spanish.

The rally grew tense as the counter-demonstrators stood across the library parking lot driveway and chanted while Save Our State organizers opened the speech section of the event shortly after 11 a.m. with a prayer from Quartz Hill Pastor Audie Yancey.

The reverend called on the counter-demonstrators, chanting "No more hate," to be quiet during the prayer, but when they failed to comply he shouted, "If you can't respect America, at least you can respect God and shut up."

Facing the chanting demonstrators, he prayed, "Bless this meeting today, Lord. Drive these illegals back home. In Jesus's name we pray."

State Sen. George Runner, R-Antelope Valley, who was listed as one of the featured speakers, left the demonstration shortly after Yancey took the podium.

Runner's exit drew the ire of Frank Jorge, leader of the Antelope Valley Minutemen, whose speeches have occasionally advocated violence.

"Screw you, George Runner, we don't need you," he told the crowd, although Runner had already departed. "Get the hell out of my sight."

Reached by cell phone later Saturday, Runner said he had understood the event was a tea party-style rally against tax increases. He noted that Saturday was the one-year anniversary of the tea party anti-tax revolt.

"Quite frankly, when it got started I was concerned about the opening; it was way to confrontational with the protesters that were there," said Runner, who is seeking election to the Board of Equalization. "And it didn't seem to be accomplishing much."

Runner said as he was leaving, one of the rally organizers cursed at him.

The counter-demonstrators filed through the SOS crowd as they moved from Valencia Boulevard to Magic Mountain Parkway, where they held a much quieter series of speeches - many of them in Spanish. Robert Gittelson, an immigrant-rights leader, told the group its goals weren't that different than the Save Our State members' goals.

"We don't want bad things for this country. We want America to succeed," he said.

As Kellar took the podium at the main rally, he clearly stated he was speaking as a private citizen, not a city councilman.

Since he told those at the January rally that if supporting one flag and one language for America was racist, then he's a proud racist, Kellar said he has received thousands of e-mails and phone messages, 98 percent of them in support of his stance on illegal immigration.

"A few have suggested I owe an apology. They're going to have a long wait," Kellar said in a prepared speech.

The Canyon Country resident received praise and applause throughout the event and told the crowd that elected officials need to do more about illegal immigration.

"America has been invaded by an army of illegals that number 15 to 20 million people, and they never had to fire a shot," Kellar said.

"Americans are sick and tired of our elected leaders taking a do-nothing attitude when it comes to illegals in this country."

City Council candidate David Gauny, who is backed by Kellar in the April election, called Kellar's speech at the last rally "the shot heard round the world."

If elected, Gauny said he will seek a city ordinance that would ban Santa Clarita landlords from renting apartments or homes to illegal immigrants. Cities in Arizona have passed similar ordinances, he said.

"This is an issue that is far too important to be swept under the rug," Gauny said. "Streets in Canyon Country and Newhall are teeming with day laborers, many of whom are here illegally."

Gauny said in an interview that he empathizes with illegal immigrants who come to the country looking for work, but the fact remains that illegal immigration must be addressed locally.

"We should attack policy, not people," Gauny told the crowd. "This is a federal issue, a state issue, a local issue and a very personal issue."
The demonstration drew a few individuals who were apparently not affiliated with either side of the illegal immigration issue.

One man arrived carrying a large wooden cross with the words "Are you ready" painted on it.

A young woman said to be a CalArts student walked about in the crowd with a sandwich-board sign reading on both sides "Deep breaths."

Those seem pretty good. A tripod always helps.

It is not necessary to frame the entire body of the speaker. Maybe start with the whole body and then slowly zoom into the face. This might also help the exposure which will be based more on the face rather than the surrounding sky in the back. Always use the slowest possible zoom, that is the most typical. Keep the speaker centered, but make adjustments extremely slowly. Watch television sometime and you will see, anywhere the camera focuses on a speaker, these slow subtle adjustments. That's what the photographer should be trying to do as well.
