ALPINE TOWNSHIP -- A man was in custody after an apparent fatal shooting on Friday evening, the Kent County Sheriff's Department said.

Authorities believe he shot and killed an individual near Eight Mile Road and Peach Ridge Avenue NW about 7 p.m.

Authorities said the suspect in the shooting is Spanish speaking, and the language barrier hampered investigators' probe into the incident.

Neighbors said the shooting was at a migrant labor camp on a farm.

No other details were available Friday night.

ALPINE TOWNSHIP -- Ed Rasch, a member of the well-known apple growing family on The Ridge, was shot and killed Friday while delivering payroll to people who work at the family's apple storage and packaging facilities.

A relative who answered the door at a home on the Rasch farm confirmed the victim's family ties, but said the family was not ready to talk about the shooting.

Services for Rasch, 50, are expected to be this week at Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuaries' Remembrance Chapel, 3525 Remembrance Road. A pending obituary notice will be placed in Sunday's Press.

Police have not yet identified the victim, and have released few details of the incident.

An unidentified suspect in the shooting was taken into custody by the Kent County Sheriff's Department on Friday.

The victim was found dead from a gunshot wound at a home on the 6100 block of Stage Avenue at about 7:20 p.m. Friday, police said.

Because the suspect is Spanish-speaking, and the language barrier with investigators initially hampered the probe into the incident.

Neighbors said the shooting took place at a migrant labor camp near the Rasch's farm.

There are a couple clusters of migrant housing near the family's homes. The camps appeared empty today and no one could be reached for comment there.
